They are back!

With fickle weather during the spring and summer; hard freeze in April, wet and cool May, weeks of hot and dry temperatures in June, cool downs in July and early August, we were beginning to wonder if they were a bit confused. As the expected August hot and humid temperatures arrived, so did the butterflies.

The bees always give me affirmation that my garden practices are ecologically friendly. This year has not been an exception with bees of all sizes swarming the thyme, chives and lavender.

The hummingbird migration has been most entertaining these past few weeks. No photos to show as they don’t stay perched for long. It seems as though the Major Wheeler Honeysuckle and lantana have been their nourishment of choice this season.

The bird feeders have been cleaned and stored; the garden has been pruned, weeded, pre-emergentized (is that a word?) and the Vermi-worms have been put out to pasture (think vermicompost).

The sewing room

has transitioned back to a dining room,

and the Tipsy Tuesday Summer Finale is history.

The Wanderer is loaded and we are ready to start our trek to College Station for Captain’s 50th high school class reunion.

First stop, Stamping Ground, Kentucky.

CELEBRATING!

94 years young! Yes, Captain’s mom is as vibrant as she looks! Living independently, she does her own housework, keeps friends and family in cookies, always has a peach or apple pie (made from scratch crusts) in the freezer, walks 1- 1 1/2 miles a day (depending on heat and humidity,) and is, in Captain’s opinion, is a safe driver. (She passed her self-imposed driving test by having Captain ride with her.) By winning 12 out of 30 games of Three-Handed Pinochle, she is the reigning champion of the June 2021 series. (There is no letting-win or handicap points in this family even if it is your birthday!)

It was so good to be back in Texas sans masks! Hugs and drinks all around at Carney’s Book Club.

After a tour of our British-Texan friend, Anne’s, garden,

we joined her and her husband, Don, for wine and conversation on their porch.

We are back home, ready to bring our garden back under control. (Looks like a bit of pruning, dead-heading and staking needs is on the agenda.)

If we look a bit younger, it is due to spending 10 consecutive days in the “sauna” of College Station, compliments of Mother Nature.

We are vaccinated!

What difference does it make?

Well, for us, it means meeting up with friends at our local brewery and Tipsy Tuesday is back.

(Per Gov. Beshear’s mandate, we will limit guests  to no more than 1000)

It means we can safely shop in brick and mortar stores and actually see what we are purchasing.

We feel comfortable worshipping in person (but we miss attending church in our pajamas.)

We have resumed traveling without hotel ventilation phobia and no more pick-up and eat in the hotel room.

We can visit fully vaccinated friends like Jesse, Kathy and Archie (Archie isn't vaccinated) in the beautiful North Carolina mountains.

Most of all we can see our family and hug our granddaughters and daughter-in-law!

Senior recital at UNCW

For us, the vaccine means we can, once again, live richly!
